Comparing Online Courses Through Cognitive Science Lenses

Instructional Design Case Study

Using cognitive theories, we examined instructional design principles applied in three online courses: Bloomberg Market Concepts on Bloomberg Terminal, After Effect CC 2015 Essential Training on Lynda.com, and What is a Mind? on FutureLearn. We learned a lot from contextualized instances of multimedia learning design.

Team Project

Members: Ana Qiu (BMC), Tong Wang (Lynda), and Tytus Wilam (FutureLearn)

Collaboration: peer feedback, group synthesis

My focus in this critique project was Bloomberg Market Concepts(BMC). It is a self-paced e-learning course on Bloomberg Terminal.

Three main features of BMC demonstrate the most design principles and cognitive theories:

  • Structural form
  • Multiple representations
  • Interactive assessment
