To help parents cultivate children’s problem-solving capability, I made a podcast to illustrate a teaching technique called cognitive modeling. By using the classic Chicken-Rabbit Math Problem, the audio provides two examples of how to use cognitive modeling to help kids solve the problem.

Modeling for modeling
Audible reasoning is an effective tool to teach kids how to engage in complex higher-order cognition and to equip them with self-management skills. I matched the learning format with the using format to allow the parents to learn the technique through audio and then to use the technique through audible thinking.
Illustrating the real-life task
I chose a not-too-simple but complex enough problem as the base case in the tutoring presentation, so that the narration of the parent model won’t look so stupid if he made a tweak of his problem-solving process.
Contrasting for the differences
I especially wanted to guide the audience's attention to emotional and metacognitive aspects when using this technique, and I was afraid mixing them with the cognitive aspect will dwarf their significance, so I designed two levels to contrast and highlight the advanced features.
